A Survival Guide for NYE 2023 in Sydney

Once it’s 31st of December, the excitement for the New Year’s Eve celebrations builds up. For those who are lucky enough to be spending New Year’s Eve in Sydney, the city offers an unforgettable experience that attracts thousands of visitors from around the world. However, for many people, the prospect of ringing in the new year can also be a source of stress and anxiety. There are a few key things you can do to ensure that your New Year’s Eve is as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

In this survival guide, we’ll be sharing some top tips for navigating the festivities, from staying safe and healthy to finding the perfect outfit and making the most of the countdown. So if you’re looking to make the most of your New Year’s Eve celebrations, read on to start planning your perfect night!

Book Your Tickets In Advance

There are many good vantage spots to watch the fireworks display in Sydney. Some of them might need tickets beforehand. But due to the thronging harbour crowd, it’s best to plan your night and reserve your seats in advance. For prime views of the fireworks from a special exclusion zone, you can book tickets for one of the Sydney New Year’s Eve cruises. You get a breathtaking ambience on the cruising waters, with illuminated harbour views paired with a splendid dining experience.

Use Public Transport

As there are major road closures for the fireworks display in Sydney, there’s no way you can take your car to the vantage points. Public transport is the best way to travel into the CBD. Be aware of large crowds and entry cut-off times at certain destinations as well. It’s  best to plan ahead for the celebrations. Don’t leave it at the last minute. Moreover, extra services for public transport will run on that day. Consider all the travel options like trains, metro, buses, light rail and ferries.

Wear Appropriate Outfit

When it’s New Year’s Eve, there might be a bit of standing at some vantage points. Especially if you have decided to travel by foot, make sure you wear the right shoes. So girls, no towering high heels! Even if you are, do pack up some foldable flats into your bag. It doesn’t have to be all gitzy throughout the night, comfy should be your style. Don’t dress too fancy, like wear hats with lights, tinsel scarves and wear 2024-shaped glasses. Dress smart, formal or just normal.

Regulate Your Drinks

An advice nobody wants to lend their ears to at New Year’s Eve. But first, the night should not be all about drinking. Take in every moment up to midnight in your senses. Second, if you get too intoxicated you will probably end up saying things you regret the next morning. Or perhaps make an utter fool of yourself. What’s more? You definitely don’t want to wake up on the first sunrise of the New Year with a bad hangover and an intolerable headache.

No Last-Minute Resolutions

It’s best not to make any resolutions on New Year’s Eve. In all probability it’s going to be hasty commitments you won’t be able to keep. These last-minute resolutions are mostly illogical and insincere. Besides, you are probably making them in your intoxicated state. Even if you are, don’t announce them aloud. Don’t face the embarrassment from your loved ones for not going along with it.

Ring in the New Year with style. Enjoy to the fullest. At the same time, remember to stay safe, comfortable and healthy as you raise a toast to the end of the year. Do tell me the vantage point you have planned for in the comments below, while I reserve my seats for one of the New Year’s Eve dinner cruises on Sydney Harbour.

For The Perfect Vivid Sydney Experience

Are you ready for Vivid Sydney? This spectacular annual event attracts millions of visitors from all over the world. With so many people in one place, navigating the crowds can be a challenge. But fear not! From choosing the right time to visit to selecting the best vantage points, this guide will give you everything you need to know before you head to Vivid Sydney. So grab your camera and get ready to immerse yourself in the magic of this dazzling festival!

Choose Your Vantage Points

Look out for the best vantage points for an amazing spectator experience of Vivid Sydney. Like the Vivid dinner cruises, which offer you a spectacular dining experience with prime views of the Vivid lights. There is also the Sydney Harbour Bridge where you can simply stroll across it for views. Better still, make it adventurous by booking tickets for a Vivid Bridge Climb. The climb comes with an open air disco dance floor as well.

Say ‘No’ to Weekends

Weekends are the busiest times to experience Vivid Sydney.  Yes, Saturday nights might seem exciting to step out but weeknights are quieter and the best time to visit and explore the city. Despite that, if you still want to head out on the weekends then late nights are the best option compared to prime family times. Even better, plan ahead for an early experience. The last week of Vivid Sydney is always the busiest so try to visit the festival prior to that.

Choose Public Transport

With limited parking, road closures and thronging crowds, public transport is the best option. There will be extra services throughout the festival for a hassle-free trip. You can use the bus, train or ferry whatever works best for you. You can use the NSW trip planner to get to your location or visit the Transport page on Vivid Sydney.com for more information. Taking an Uber or a taxi wouldn’t be such a good idea. Considering the distance, your wallet will probably feel light.

Keep Your Kids In Check

It’s obvious that Vivid Sydney is a crowded event, so if you are tagging your kids along, make sure you are holding their hands tight. You can also head to the Vivid Sydney medical posts, fetch some wristbands for your kids with your phone number written on them. In case they get lost in the crowd, you can get reunited in no time. You can also introduce them to Vivid Sydney volunteers who can be easily spotted in their pink jackets.

Be an Early Bird

Get to the city early, this is the best way to get away from thronging crowds, even on the public transport. It makes it much hassle-free to get around The Rocks. Once you get there ahead in time, you can do a lot of fun stuff at The Rocks from shopping at the markets to exploring museums, art galleries and cafes. It’s better to eat early as all the food joints end up with long queues from 7pm. So, come in early, have a great time exploring The Rocks, have a meal down the water’s edge, find yourself a good spot and view the magnificent Vivid highlights.

These tips will help you enjoy the dazzling light displays, interactive installations, and live music performances without feeling overwhelmed. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned veteran, these insider tips and tricks will help you navigate the crowds and get the most out of this incredible event. So, get ready to be dazzled by the lights, inspired by the art, and entertained by the performances at Vivid Sydney.

I will be getting aboard one of the Vivid Lights cruises for the Vivid Sydney experience in 2023. Tell me your preferred vantage point this year, in the comments below.

The Benefits of Pre-Planning Your Christmas Party in Sydney

When the holiday season arrives, with it comes the excitement of Christmas parties. Whether it’s a small gathering with family and friends or a big corporate event, it’s never too early to start planning. In fact, pre-planning your Christmas party can have a number of benefits that you may not have considered. From avoiding last-minute stress to securing the perfect venue, there are many advantages to getting a head start on your party preparations. In this article, we’ll explore the top benefits of planning your Christmas party early in Sydney, and why it’s a smart move for any party host. So, grab a cup of cocoa and let’s dive in!

It’s Now or Never

‘Tomorrow never comes’ is true as the saying goes. For all those who think it’s too early to plan a Christmas party, here’s an eye opener. Popular venues are booked well in advance before the Christmas season begins. It’s always best to have a head start, with all the options at your hand. Many corporate firms pre-plan their parties, so before they secure a date, get yourself the first preference. Take for instance, an exceptional venue like Christmas party harbour cruises in Sydney, that offers you a splendid waterfront dining experience. You can easily book online or get in touch with consultants, months ahead of the season with the best rates.

The Earlier You Decide, The More The Choice

Yes, the earlier you plan, the more the choices in front of you. Your ideal venue won’t be served right on your platter at your chosen time. There are many people out there looking for a venue just like you, who are ready to book, months in advance. So, book early so that you are open to more options of venues, decorations, themes, suppliers etc.

Last Minute Solutions, More Confusions

If you need to ensure everything is taken care of, last minute planning won’t do. Booking early gives you ample time to plan all the pre-requisites for a perfect party–everything from finding a venue, theme, catering, entertainment and sending out invitations. It can’t be taken for granted that these will be available to you at the last moment. If you are planning on including celebrity guests or bands as part of your party, you need to confirm their availability on the said date. Once everything is sorted out and under control, you can sit back and chill. The only task left for you is to host the party.

The Early Bird Catches The Worm

Heard about early bird pricing or discounts? Some of the best venues offer this in the festive season. These are discounts for parties booked months in advance. So if you want to save costs, and want to plan your Christmas party the smart way, then do your advance bookings for attractive early bird discounts. Many venues like restaurants, hotels and Sydney Christmas party cruises offer early bird discounts during the Christmas season.

The More The Merrier

Well, set aside celebrity guests and music bands, don’t forget about your guests! You need to secure their dates as well. They might get into other plans or commitments, so get hold of them beforehand. During the months leading to the festive season, people are more likely to be free. That means more invitees in your guest list and a whole lot of invitations that you will need to send out.

Well, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, and what better way to celebrate it than by throwing a party in Sydney? With its stunning beaches, iconic landmarks, and vibrant nightlife, Sydney proves to be the perfect destination for an unforgettable Christmas party. So go ahead, plan ahead for a happening Christmas party in the Emerald City.

Exceptional New Year’s Eve Traditions Across The World

All of us are one when it comes to celebrating New Year’s Eve and making resolutions. But around the world there are different ways of ringing in the New Year. They have traditions they believe will bring good luck and fortune to the coming year. You might call them superstitions, but it’s more part of their culture. Moreover it’s all part of ending the year on a high note. Let’s take a sneak peek into a few new year traditions followed across the globe.

Sydney – The Tradition of Watching The Fireworks

Sydney is one of the first major cities to welcome the New Year which is attended by millions around the world. It’s no doubt that the main event and tradition of the Emerald City is the breathtaking fireworks display on Sydney Harbour.  There is a massive countdown at midnight, followed by a colourful array of fireworks set to music, accompanied by laser shows and pyrotechnic displays on the Harbour Bridge. There are many vantage points to view this centre point of attraction, including the New Year’s Eve cruises

The New Year’s Eve dinner cruises on Sydney Harbour offers you a great waterfront dining experience – you can wine, dine and enjoy the fireworks show in a mesmerising setting.

New York – The Tradition of Watching The Ball Drop

New York is popular for its tradition of watching the ball drop at the stroke of midnight. And it’s no ordinary ball, my mates! This geodesic sphere ball of 12-foot, 11,875 pounds is covered with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles and illuminated by 32,256 LEDs. It can display a palette of more than 16 million vibrant colours and billions of patterns, creating a kaleidoscope effect atop One Times Square. The musical performances, fireworks and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” are added highlights to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

The tradition began when the New York Times owner Adolph Ochs created this event to ring in the new year 1908, to attract attention to the Time’s news headquarters. Back then, the ball was merely made of iron and wood.

Spain – The Tradition of Eating Grapes

In Spain, for each chime of the clock, it’s a tradition to eat 12 grapes at midnight.  Flashback to the 19th century, there was a huge grape harvest during the festive season when the King gave surplus of the produce to the people to consume on New Year’s Eve. It was believed to bring good fortune, health and luck throughout the year. Not easy as it sounds, you are supposed to eat all the grapes till the clock strikes 12.

This tradition is known as ‘las doce uvas de la suerte’ in Spanish. The series of 12 chimes represent the 12 months of the new year.

Denmark – The Tradition of Smashing Plates

Another unique tradition is found in Denmark. It’s the practice among the Danish to throw plates at their family, neighbour’s or friend’s door. Sounds fun? Better still. It’s believed that the more broken plates accumulated on their doorstep, the better off they are. So there’s no question of them being upset about your actions on New Year’s Eve.

There is a belief that this tradition also wards off evil spirits. People even climb on top of the chairs and jump off them at midnight in hope of good fortune.

Japan – The Tradition of Ringing Bells

There is a traditional yet interesting ceremony of bell-ringing in Japan. Bells are rung in the Buddhist temple 108 times to cleanse 108 desires, anxieties or sins leading up to the New Year. Each chime eradicates worldly passion like anger, suspicion etc. You must overcome all these worldly desires to reach nirvana. With the last bell at midnight, you can start the new year, on a fresh leaf, free of vices.

Another interesting tradition in Japan is eating “Toshikoshi soba”, a dish with long buckwheat noodles. The noodles symbolise longevity and the buckwheat plant, resilience. It is believed that eating these noodles breaks you free from the past year.

Didn’t you find these traditions exceptional? If you plan to visit any of these countries, do try being part of it as well.

Vivid Sydney Festival – A Flashback to 2022

Vivid Sydney Festival –  when Emerald City is filled with lights, music and ideas. Sydneysiders and tourists look forward to witnessing this awesome spectacle with baited breath. No doubt, it’s the perfect event to have a swell time with your family and favorites. When it comes to children, it’s a good source of inspiration, to learn about new ideas, people and the place. Here, I take you back in time to the Vivid Sydney Festival highlights in 2022.

Vivid Sydney Cruises at Sydney Harbour

The Vivid Lights cruises on Sydney Harbour prove to be the best vantage point to witness all the dazzling action of Vivid Sydney Festival. You can enjoy panoramic views of the light displays, harbour attractions and the city skyline at night.  Treat your eyes to the glowing light art and vibrant 3D projections on the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Relish a deluxe dinner with upgradeable beverage packages. You can book ahead to experience a  spectacular waterfront dining ambience.

Sydney Infinity at Darling Harbour

For an awe-inspiring virtual wonder, the city geared up for the first ever largest “liquid and light show” in Australian history, exclusively designed for Vivid. An array of 48 compressed-air water cannons delivered a powerful crescendo of visual wonder and sonic blast waves that was simply breathtaking. The floating installation consisted of over 250 meters of robotic fountains that could shoot nine tonnes of water in the air in a single second! It was simultaneously lit by thousands of powerful LEDs, with a sudden dance of liquid and light. Two choreographed shows Pop Sydney and Classic Sydney on loop from 6pm-11pm every night was the perfect family event. These shows discovered different sides of Sydney, synced to soundtracks created by Sydney’s own Peewee Ferris and others. The liquid and light spectacle of this superscale, 360-degree experience was completely awe-inspiring.

Vivid Reflections at Central Station

The interactive projection experience featured motion capture technology to turn your movements into animated action, which then beams them onto the landmark clock tower like a walk across Bondi Beach and so on. It was a visual celebration of the spirit of Sydney. The relationship with the city was elevated with these large-scale representations. The Central Station’s unique architecture transformed into a beautiful extension of the places highlighted. That too, in sync with driving music tracks and evocative sound effects.

The Light Walk from Central Station

In 2022, Sydney witnessed the longest walk that ran 8km from Central Station through the city and around Circular Quay to the iconic Sydney Opera House. Every step of the way, there was an amazing sight of grand projections, interactive installations and dazzling lasers.

Wild Lights at Taronga Zoo

Creatures from land, sky and sea emerged in a visual spectacle through the magic of light here. Taronga last year, was bathed in a rainbow of color with innovative, inclusive installations and breathtaking projections. It was an experience of three never-seen-before, purpose-built installations that featured a personal story of inclusion by the artist. It was a journey of discovery through Wild Lights.

Ephemeral Oceanic at Walsh Bay

Experience the Walsh Bay transform into a giant bubble bath with the floating boardwalk that weaved between 150 larger than life illuminated spheres. Lit from within, the dazzling orbs changed color throughout the night. It was choreographed to a unique soundscape where the surface of water was illuminated creating an unmissable dance of light. The spectacle continued during the day as well. Each bubble reacted to the changing light of the sun as it moved across the sky, causing a rainbow of reflection on the water.

2022 had such fascinating experiences and activities at the Vivid Sydney Festival. So, it’s a guarantee that you can expect something much better and beyond in 2023. Stay tuned to be dazzled!

When Mom Planned to Visit Me in Sydney…

I have worked for nearly a decade in Sydney. Being a family-centric person, it was a bit of a struggle to be away from them. So, I made sure to make a visit to my hometown every once in a while to give them a tender hug. Last month, my happiness knew no bounds when my mom gave me a surprise visit. I wanted to make her stay in the city a memory to cherish forever. So, we toured around to experience the best highlights of the ‘Emerald City’.

A Therapeutic Walk Around Royal Botanic Gardens

With my mom, being a hard-core nature lover, the Royal Botanic Gardens was first on our list. The lush gardens offered us a wonderful experience with ‘Nature Therapy Walks’. I felt that this outdoor activity was ideally suited for not just my mom but for me as well. For a person who was constantly under work pressure this was essential. It was a complete stress buster where facilitators guided us through a series of sensory experiences, mindfulness and nature appreciation. I felt a sense of tranquility and peace over the face of my mom as she felt a connection with the nature around her.

An Entertaining Ambience Aboard a Dinner Cruise

My mom loved everything involving entertainment, her wish was my command. Owing to my previous experience, I thought, “What’s better than a harbour cruise offering dinner, views and the most amazing show.” I chose an authentic paddlewheeler, confident that the vintage ambience would surely impress her.

After a warm welcome at the wharf, my excited mom got aboard the cruise and witnessed a world of grandeur. I enjoyed each and every expression of her awe and joy as she sauntered the outer decks, taking in the harbour attractions. On my mom’s special request, we captured numerous snaps against the iconic Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. The fun began once we were done with our scrumptious dinner. We were entertained with a cavalcade of spectacular songs and dances onboard. Huge thanks to one of the best dinner cruises on Sydney Harbour for an exceptional night to remember.

An Exhilarating Tour at the Opera House

The first thing on my mom’s wish list was to see the iconic attractions of Sydney. So, I decided to take her on the Opera House Tour. It was a guided walking tour where they took us on a journey of the icon’s untold stories in history. We also got to watch memorable moments from past concert hall performances. Through a digital experience, we learned about the history and future of the Opera House. The breathtaking part! The cathedral interiors, the sweep of the sails, the 270-degree visuals, state-of-the-art technology and so on.. My mom exited out of the Opera House halfheartedly. She just couldn’t get enough of the iconic attraction.

A Splendid Experience Exploring The Rocks Markets

I couldn’t possibly leave The Rocks weekend markets out of the list. The vibrant market was filled with local makers, food stalls, live music and more. We had a swell of a time where my mom pulled me from stall to stall, to buy artisanal wares, handmade beauty products, gifts and more from local makers. Later, we stopped at food stalls to treat our taste buds.  It brought a smile to my face, to see her relish delicacies from skewers to pizzas and gelatos.  To top it all, the market ambience was enriched with beautiful music in the background.

My mom returned to my hometown with immense happiness (and lots of goodies from Sydney as well).  I won’t be able to tell who’s happier though, me or her? I only have the city to thank for its stunning highlights, the main cause of her happiness. I have shared this experience, in the hope that it will be helpful for you in case your folks come to the city for a visit. Please comment below if I was successful in doing so.

Ways to Enjoy Christmas with your Workmates in Sydney

Ask me, what is my favourite holiday? I will raise my hands to say, “Christmas”, without any doubt. I am pretty sure it is the same with most people out there. Especially in Sydney, the most exceptional part is ‘tis season falls in the summer unlike any other. That’s what makes Christmas special for me.

Another major reason is the celebrations. I personally enjoy my yearly workplace parties. That’s the moment we de-stress, get together and have some good fun. If you are churning out Christmas party ideas for the next year, here are a few best party ideas.

An Office Party with a Theme

If a party is centred around a theme, it will certainly be engaging for the entire team. Here are some suggestions:

  • White Christmas Party – There’s no snowballs and winter in Sydney, but you can certainly create one at your very one office. Deck up your workspace with white lights and snowflakes decorations. You can also create your very own snowman with cotton balls
  • Christmas Masquerade Party – Add a touch of thrill and mystery to Christmas by hosting a masquerade-theme party. The work team can wear masks as they dress in red and white. Conduct fun games to excite the team
  • Decades Party – Celebrate Christmas in a specific era; such as 1920s, 1950s, or 1980s. Everyone can dress in costumes that reflect that era. Deck up the office for a retro ambience

A Party Aboard Sydney Christmas Cruises

A Christmas celebration deserves an exceptional venue–an outdoor party where you can dine, chill and later discuss the team’s efforts and future goals. Work Christmas party cruises on Sydney Harbour are the best examples for such an exceptional venue. A splendid waterfront dining experience is presented to you with the best views of the harbour attractions, dining and drinks.

A vintage paddlewheeler would make a good choice with its old-charm and cosy interiors. Raise a toast with drinks in your hands as you saunter around its wrap-around verandahs. Impress your team with the ambience and the breathtaking views of the iconic attractions. Don’t forget to take snaps with your group against the backdrop of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.

Gift exchange as Secret Santa

This should be the annual holiday custom at offices on Christmas. The Secret Santa gift is a fun way to unite the team in harmony.  Obviously, an office will be divided into teams. This method can bring everyone closer together by exchanging gifts. Here are some ways to organise Secret Santa:

  • Establish a budget: First and foremost set a budget for the gifts and notify everyone about it. That way you can ensure if everyone agrees to it and the gift is of similar value
  • Assign names : Make name cards for the team and let them pick one. They should be the Secret Santa for the name they select and get a gift for them at the party
  • Set ground rules: Make sure everyone understands the rules, the budget and the deadline. Also if it’s ok to reveal the identity or not till then
  • Shop for gifts: Most importantly buy a gift for the person assigned, keeping in mind the budget. If you know the person really well,  get a gift according to the person’s interests or preferences

Donate for a noble cause

The Christmas season is a great way to give back to others in a beautiful way. Share the cheer and joy to the people around you. You can experience the same emotion when you help someone else. Be a Santa to others by donating to a charity, such as providing Christmas meals for orphanages or old age homes.

You can also donate to a homeless shelter by donating warm clothes, blankets and other essentials. Experience the joy of children on Christmas by offering them gifts such as toys in the hospital. You can even make a monetary donation at such places. Spend time with people who are alone and be a volunteer at a local organisation.

Now, the stage is set to make your Christmas work party super fun. Get together with your teammates and have a blast!

The Australian Museum offers you immersive exhibitions and interactive experiences.
