My Plans For The Upcoming Months in Sydney

For the past few years, we’ve all been spending too much time indoors, often looking back at the memorable times from behind a blur. Celebrations, hanging out with friends, going to concerts and big-name events, don’t we miss it all? Ever since the world kicked back in from its voluntary sabbatical in the form of a pandemic, there is some relief to the unsolicited solitude. From what I’ve been reading on the internet, one way to live with boredom and loneliness is to make plans for the future and that’s exactly what I did. I made a list of things I wish to accomplish before 2022 ends. From hosting an online exhibition of my artworks to planning a get together with my friends from college aboard one of the New Year’s Eve cruises in Sydney, my list is as diverse as it can get. Although the saying “Never let them know your next move,” could stand true for many, I feel sharing mine would give me an edge to work better for it. So here it goes…

Hosting an exhibition of my best artworks has been on my mind ever since my college days. And since the pandemic hit us, we’ve all had so much time to ourselves, oftentimes finding ourselves in bouts of boredom, not knowing what to do. These days, I’ve been dreaming a lot about travelling around the world and spending time with my friends on board one of the Sydney NYE cruises. But the thought of the exhibition was something that knocked me back into reality. It was during this period I restarted my old hobbies. Drawing and painting have been my most favourite hobbies since my childhood days. But never did I imagine myself to be equipped enough to be planning for an exhibition. So here I am, planning for my independent exhibition and feeling very much alive.

Closely in line with my artistic aspirations is my inclination for learning digital art. Starting today, I’m attending digital art classes. I hope I’ll soon be able to transpose my drawing skills to digital media too. From what I know, there is a great demand for digital art and artists. Although I don’t see myself as a commercial artist, I have aspirations bordering on becoming one anyways. Could that be hypocritical? I’m all ears to hear your suggestions on this.

I’ve never been the extroverted kind, but I enjoy being around the people I love. Although I like spending time on my own, I realised that socialising could be my way to gain a different perspective on life and people. When this realisation hit me, I decided I should be more open to conversations with people outside my comfort zone. And that’s my third wish for myself for this year—to become more genuinely social other than wading through the pretence of being an extrovert. And that’s exactly why I’ve booked tickets for a New Year’s Eve cruise, a wonderful venue to mix and mingle. Sydney is home to some excellent cafes that will transport you to a wonderland of coffee. In fact, Sydneysiders love their local coffee so much that Starbucks actually waved the white flag a couple of years ago! And due to the fact that upscale wooden furniture and funky forks are taking over, you can get your apt dose of caffeine with a hint of hipster vibes!

We rise early

Sydney is known for its interesting food scene with the major focus on its seafood. It’s not that Sydney is seafood dominant but you just can’t avoid it, considering the wide variety of options available in the markets and restaurants. Almost every beach in Sydney has at least one fish and chip shop. The famous Sydney Fish Market is booming everyday, where punters get hold of their fresh catch around 5.30AM (might be even earlier during Christmas) or show up later for lunch. Narooma is famous for mesmerising rock formations, pristine beaches, and most importantly, Aboriginal cultural practices. If you are not familiar with what “Aboriginals” mean, they are considered the first and original inhabitants of the land and also the holders of the oldest continuing culture in the world. If you are fascinated by the culture, beliefs, and the lives of the native Australians, you should check out this town and listen to their long storied history and lifestyle. While we were in Narooma, we went for ‘Ngaran Ngaran Gulaga Creation Tour’, a guided tour which aims to help the tourists to learn more about the history of Aboriginals and their interesting narratives about Creation Myth and Dreamtime Stories. The Aboriginals have a spiritual connection with their land, water and all natural phenomena. And all their stories have something to teach us.

Introspect At Royal Botanic Gardens

Being in the midst of nature all by yourself was one of my favourite things to do in Sydney and my go-to spot was the Royal Botanic Gardens. Situated on the harbour, the garden is spectacular to say the least, spanning almost 70 acres of lush greenery and rolling hills. I spent my time here reading a book or simply just admiring the surroundings which included quiet ponds, gentle fountains, immense variety of flowers, huge trees and foliage. The combined result is an oasis that gets juxtaposed by the towering skyscrapers and the sounds of cars in the far. It is the ultimate place in the city to relax and enjoy a solo picnic, while watching the boats go past you. And if you’re keen to explore more about the indigenous history of the land, there is also the guided Aborignal Heritage tour, which was an eye-opener for me.

Not gonna lie, this one actually took some effort from me. Going alone and snagging a bargain at one of the busiest tourist hubs in the city is terrifying, well, atleast at first. On Saturdays and Sundays, a huge number of vendors meet up at The Rocks market and set up their tents to sell their unique products. If you’re longing to go home with that precious souvenir, then this is the place. Exploring The Rocks makes for a fun day out, especially on weekends when there is live music and street performers.
